The 7 Chakras System

Everyone has 7 Chakras in an energy system that aids each one of us in our daily life. These 7 chakras are disks of energy located at points up and down the spine, corresponding with major nerve ganglia formations and identified with specific aspects of our body, mind, and spirit.  As Anodea Judith writes in her classic “Wheels of Life” A User’s Guide to the Chakra System”; “Swirling intersections of vital life forces, each chakra reflects an aspect of consciousness essential to our lives. Together the seven chakras form a profound formula for wholeness that integrates mind, body, and spirit.”  The chakra system is based on the Hindu work for wheel, “chakra”, and can be considered complementary to the Chinese and Eastern Asian viewpoint of chi and life energy flow.

You can imagine each of these chakras as a budding flower, waiting to open when the time is right. From birth to adulthood, each chakra comes into bloom with the passing of years and each is successively turned on as we grow into adulthood.

Ideally, each chakra should be open and balanced, allowing for the free flow of energy throughout the body, mind, and spirit which results in a rich and balanced life. However, each chakra can be open, closed, weak, or over compensating due to unresolved injury or conflict. As you can see from the following list, when one or more chakras are out of balance, they can impact parts of your life in recurring ways until you heal the imbalance.

The 7 Chakras

Through the following list, you can see how each are associated with body, mind, and spirit. The first three chakras are associated with the body and its needs. The fourth and fifth chakras are of the “mind” dealing with our emotions and communication. The sixth and seventh have to do with spirit, the intangibles that are as essential to a full life as are body and mind, and these two chakras work with our spiritual connections and needs.

The first charka is the root chakra and it is all about survival and getting your basic needs met.

The second chakra is the sacral chakra and it is all about pleasure, sexuality, and feeling good through play, touch, and sex.

The third chakra is at the solar plexus and it express our personal power, our will, our ability to implement and to effect change.

The fourth charka is the heart chakra and it can radiate and receive love, affection, forgiveness, compassion, and is the space for all of our emotions.

The fifth chakra is the throat chakra and it is about expression of self, being heard, communication, and speaking one’s truth.

The sixth chakra is associated with the third eye or the seat of our intuition, and it helps us with visualization, intuition, and discernment.

The seventh chakra is the crown chakra and it is associated with our connection to divinity, to God, to spirit, and with consciousness and our belief system.

How Do I Know If Mine are Open, Closed, Weak, or What?

Depending on our experience of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, we may be living too much in our body chakras and our upper chakras may be very weak. Or we may be living too much in our upper chakras without taking care of our lower chakras. Any of these situations means we’re out of balance and not living our lives to their fullest potential, and often that we’re in a great deal of mental or psychic pain.

By becoming aware of the needs that are associated with each of our chakras, we can begin to heal ourselves and move the stagnating energy out of the unbalanced chakra up the spine so that our life energy begins to move freely through each chakra as it is meant to.

I will be writing a series of blogs on each of the chakras to help you understand each chakra, how you can know if you’re out of balance, and what you can do to provide some immediate relief if you’re suffering. I will also provide short, daily meditations and EFT scripts to help you spend just a bit of your day honoring your body, mind, and spirit.
